GREAT VALUE Under $20 the Poachers Ridge Merlot 2005 - Mount Barker
Trophy Winner – Australia, New Zealand & South Africa Tri-Nations Invitational Wine Challenge 2007
The trio of national judges at the 2007 Tri Nations Wine Challenge are undeniably the most influential wine identities from each country. Robert Joseph(Chair), James Halliday(Australia), Bob Campbell(New Zealand), and Michael Fidjhon(South Africa).
The Tri Nations challenge is unique in that wines are entered by judges invitation only and there are only 321 wines in the competition. This would represent the best in each class. Class 7 of 13 was for merlots in which Western Australia's 2005 Poachers Ridge Merlot was awared the trophy.
Robert Joseph Comments ".. Unlike other competetions ..where a strong class could have three or more equally highly marked Gold medal winners, at the TRi Nations, were looking for winners."
" Very good hue; merlot of the highest quality; a mix of cassis, blackcurrant and plum; perfect medium-bodied structure and balance; long finish.
Rating 95 points To 2018 " James Halliday Australian Wine Companion 2008.
