For the Eldertonians,
Stop Press! The Elderton 2005 Estate Merlot has been named at the pinnacle of an international Merlot tasting, compiled by Gourmet Traveller's WINE Magazine.
The Gourmet Traveller tasting panel, which was represented by some of the best and most respected wine journalists in the country including Huon Hooke, Peter Bourne, Nick Bulleid (MW), Andrew Caillard (MW), Peter Forrestal and Sophie Otton, rated the 2005 Elderton Estate Merlot as not only the best in class, but also the solitary 5 star wine of the tasting.
The article, which features in the April/May 08 edition went on to describe the 2005 Estate Merlot as:
"Shows a complex mix of red fruits, prominent cedary oak and some earthiness from bottle-age. Caillard loved it: Fragrant, cranberry and redcurrant, with grilled meats and cedar. Concentrated palate, with mocha and oak, finishing with fine-grained, chalky tannins. We thought the round, fleshy palate – typically Barossa – was a great feature of the wine. Enjoy it now and over the next five years." 93 Points
This follows on from the wonderful review that it received in the Sydney Morning Herald (Huon Hooke) a few weeks back, including being named as the wine of the week.
We currently have less than 10 cases of the 2005 available, so please act quickly should you like to secure a parcel of this wine.
"Colour is truly a deep and handsome blood red. There are intense aromas of crushed berries, capsicum and mint, minerals and violets. Palate is luscious, enthralling, amazingly full bodied for a Merlot, with an amazing core of fruit, refined silky textures. Soft and gentle and smooth, fresh and lively, with bright red berry flavours and good fruit sweetness, round and plump, finely dusted tannins and a seductively long finish. A sturated black-forest cake of a Merlot that is tops in it's class, Elderton offers integrated flavours with exceptional balance of fruit to wood, harmony and great length. "Soft, mocha, chocolate, black cherry, and black tea-like characteristics. Spicy and fruity, with a judicious touch of oak!" -eRobertparker.com
